So what the heck is a do follow directory? How do I know if a directory is a “do follow”? Some directories will have this information posted somewhere on there website. But the only way to know for sure is checking your backlinks. For me I just fire up ol’ SEO Elite and “BAM!” (sorry Emiril) the results are right in front of me. There are many free seo back link checker tools, just search for one. But give your submissions some time to get posted before you check. Most directories will give you a confirmation email when your link is posted. Then once that link is processed by the search engines, you have a backlink. So this difference is the code behind the link. A “no follow” link means the search engines wont give you credit (or a vote) for the link.
Are no follow directories a waste of time? Yes and no. No because no matter how smart you think you may be. You never know exactly what is on a buyers mind, and you never know where they might end up. So keep posting at every place you can, its never a bad thing. Back to the question at hand – Yes , from a SEO aspect – No from a branding/advertising aspect. So I guess what im trying to say here is an advertising guy will tell you to link everywhere you can. A seo guy will tell you to link in a do follow directory.
For those of you willing to share I have started a list of 40 do follow directories that I have personally verified. Feel free to try them out and let me know what kind of results they get you. Plus if you like to leave a few “do follow” directories that you would like to share, please leave a comment. I will keep this list updated from time to time for all our benefits.
